In Melmaruvathur, the divine Mother Adhiparasakthi, the primordial source, has incarnated as Bangaru Adigalar, making it a spiritual hub for people from all walks of life, from all over the world.
The Siddhar Peedam governed by the Divine Mother is unique in many aspects, including the following:
- Engaging the oppressed people in spiritual practices
- Giving prominence to women by involving them in all spiritual activities and rituals,
- Teaching everyone the universal truth
- Emphasising revering nature as God
- Serving selflessly, and
- Signifying unity through wearing red, the color of blood.
Mother Adhiparasakthi reveals Herself in manifold ways. She works through all the different forms yet pointing out that it is all within Her powers that living beings experience life without realizing that they reside in Her.
She is here in human form, delivering oracles to all through Her unconditional grace.
Her divine power of illusion deludes all except those who have performed great charity or have merits accrued from their noble deeds in the past.
Spiritual guidance here is different from other places, for the instructions are from the Divine Mother Herself. The key to accessing the highest wisdom of self-realization or liberation is entirely in Amma's custody. There is no way to commune with Her or experience the states of ecstasy or bliss unless Amma graciously unlocks the doorway.
Here is a real-life experience of a devotee who did not know anything about spirituality but spent all his time in Her service. He would distribute Sakthi Oil magazines and pass on the proceeds for 'Anna Dhaanam' or free food distribution.
He and a couple of other devotees once visited a wealthy person to ask for a donation. When they explained the purpose of their visit, the rich person, a spiritual practitioner himself aspiring for an advanced state of bliss, belittled the devotees, making them feel they were in a very primitive stage in spirituality doing charity, collecting funds, and so forth. The devotees managed to collect a small amount for one Sakthi Oli Magazine and left.
While returning home, the devotee was thinking about people judging them as worthless. Instantaneously, the devotee felt a strong surge of energy pushing him to inexpressible bliss, where he felt his mind was filled with light, making him feel delighted and elevated, without any worry or fear.
Although the wealthy person had been longing to achieve this blissful state, Amma had only blessed our devotee with such a rare experience. The state of bliss was graced upon one who did not know anything about spirituality but was only carrying out Amma's selfless service and charity instructions.
In Her way, the Mother provides liberation, wisdom, or whatever one wishes for, as She is amidst us. Therefore, one must waste no time and make sure to utilize the opportunity entirely.

The Glory of Melmaruvathur:

In the early 1970s, our Siddhar Peedam had started celebrating Aadipooram and Navarathiri festivals and worshipping the 'Suyambu' with Amma's mantras. During this time, Amma had ordained that a sculptor from Mahabalipuram sculpt a statue of Mother Adhiparasakthi.
Every single detail that went into the making of the statue came from Amma's oracles. A thirty-six-inch-tall Goddess on a lotus pedestal, whose left hand holds the 'Chinmudra', a hand symbol representing the union of the individual soul with the Supreme soul. Her right hand has a lotus bud, Her right leg is folded, and Her left leg is rests firmly on a lotus placed on earth. A human heart is often compared to a lotus. It is to signify that Adhiparasakthi resides in our hearts, that the pedestal is shaped like a lotus.
When the statue was sculpted, Amma had ordained it to be taken around the towns and villages surrounding Melmaruvathur as 'Karikolam'. In Tamil, 'Kari' means an elephant, and ‘kolam’ means procession. It was customary to carry a statue on the back of an elephant before installing it inside the temple's Sanctum Sanctorum. Similarly, our Goddess Adhiparasakthi was also taken in a vehicle to places in and around Melmaruvathur. This journey started on May 1, 1977 and went on for thirty-six days. What was special about this journey is that our Bangaru Amma went with the deity on several occasions. Amma gave detailed instructions to the devotees on how they should conduct themselves, how to worship when the deity arrives at the other temples, or peoples' houses who invite the Goddess home.
Amma performed numerous miracles during 'Karikolam'. After thirty-six days of visiting a hundred and eight temples and many villages, the deity reached Melmaruvathur on June 5, 1977. As per the custom of placing the deity, Adhiparasakthi's statue was placed in water for a few months. Amma ordained the statue be installed inside the Sanctum Sanctorum behind the 'Suyambu' on November 25, 1977. A 'Yagna' was performed at three in the morning that day. The biggest miracle in this journey took place that day. Amma said this day brought immense pleasure to the celestial beings and Siddhars so much that they expressed their joy through the rain. Yes, it rained heavily that morning that the devotees were concerned it would stall the 'Yagna' worship. But Amma performed a miracle and ordained the rain Gods do not pour over the 'Yagna' pit! Not a drop of water fell on the 'Yagna,' but everywhere else, it poured! Also, when the devotees started running for cover, Amma glanced toward the sky, and instantaneously the rain stopped.
After the 'Yagna', the statue was installed over 'Navadhaniyam' or nine holy grains instead of nine precious stones, which was the norm at the other temples. But at Amma's Siddhar Peedam, it was unusual, and the installation was successful. Thus, for the last four decades, the beautiful deity of Goddess Adhiparasakthi has been blessing us immensely - the educated and the uneducated, men and women, the rich and the poor, all alike.

How the 1008 Tamil Mantras were given by Amma
Bangaru Amma, The Divine Incarnate, has also guided devotees with instructions on prayer and chanting. The mantras Amma has given us are ...written in Tamil and charged with power or Shakthi by The Mother Herself.

The 1008 Potri Malargal Mantras: - To be Chanted on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during worship
It all started when a poet of the Siddhar Peedam had wished to write an elaborate 1008 - chant of the Divine so that it can be recited during festivals. Earlier it was only the hymns such as the 'Venduthar Kooru', 'Sakthi Vazhipaadu' etc. that were being recited during worship.
He kept it to himself as he felt he wasn't well-versed with the science and rituals associated with mantras. He, however, continued to write.

Once during a Neem Manthirippu, Amma told him to quickly complete the mantras he was working on! He was taken aback wondering how Amma knew his secret mission but was also thrilled and overjoyed that his work was being acknowledged by the Divine! Filled with boundless enthusiasm, he managed to complete the mantras, dedicating them to Her lotus feet.

His references for the work had been the mantras and hymns that sung the glories of the Mother Divine such as the classic 'Lalitha Saharanama', 'Soundarya Lahari" etc. Amma, the epitome of grace and mercy, reviewed his work and also suggested corrections.

Beyond Every Principle
While reviewing the Mantras, Amma spotted one that meant 'Praise be unto You, the consort of Shiva'. Pointing to that verse, Amma said "I am not controlled by the "Ishwara" principle", so you may remove that." Here, The Divine Mother, in a very subtle manner reveals that She, the primordial supreme and eternal, is beyond all principles and is not controlled by any.
Similarly, another mantra was seeking the removal of solitude. Amma instructed to remove that mantra too, as a true aspirant will always choose to remain in solitude or aloneness in the spiritual path. Hence, that mantra was also removed. After a few changes and corrections, Amma blessed the Mantras consecrating them with neem and thus the 1008 Potri Malargal Mantras have been given to us!

The 1008 Potri Thiruvuru Mantras: To be Chanted on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays during worship
There was another poet who had also written another set of 1008 mantras in praise of the Mother. He took them to Amma and sought Her blessings. Amma blessed the Mantras with neem leaves showing Her acceptance and thus came by the '1008 Potri Thiruvuru'.

The Moola Mantra
Once, Amma asked a devotee why an 'Invocation Hymn' that is to be recited before the chanting of any Mantra was not written for which neither the devotee nor the poets had any answer. Amma proclaimed that She had deliberately masked them from writing and gave the 'Invocation Hymn' Herself! She told them to make a note of the verses and thus the Moola mantra we chant today was revealed by the Divine Herself!

Om Sakthiyae! Maruvoor Arasiyae!
Om Sakthiyae! Om Vinayaga!
Om Sakthiyae! Om Kamakshiyae!

Infusing Sakthi or Power to the Tamil Mantras
All spiritual traditions see sound as a key component of connection to the Divine. The power of sound is paramount. Many of the sacred Mantras in Sanskrit that are thousands of years old dating back to the Vedic times are made up of syllables and sounds that are highly energizing, thus assuring benefits, harmony, and healing when chanted.
But these mantras were not available to everyone, especially not to the underprivileged or the downtrodden due to the social structure, language, and caste barricades. Moreover, incorrect pronunciation of the syllables had its own repercussions. But now, the mantras in Tamil, are highly potent, powerful, and sacred as they are energized by none other than the Divine Mother Herself. Being in the native language these mantras are simple to understand, available to everyone, easy to chant to perfection, and immensely beneficial to all.

Amma has been guiding Her devotees through Her oracles over every aspect of the Melmaruvathur Siddhar Peedam. Through these oracles, Amma has ordained ...ways to celebrate all the festivals at the Siddhar Peedam. After the first festival that was Aadipooram celebrated in 1972, Amma graced us with the Navarathri worship in 1973.

Navarathri is a significant festival that spans 9 nights and 10 days during the autumn season. On the first day, Amma lights the "Agandam '' lamp filled with "Mukutta" oil, a mix of three oils -Neem, Coconut, and Sesame. The Agandam burns for nine days continuously, while devotees pour "Mukutta '' oil into the lamp, worship the light from the flame and inhale the holy fumes.

The lamp is carried around the Siddhar Peedam before placing it at a decorated corner of the Sanctum Sanctorum. When the lamp is carried around, a Drishti is performed at all 8 corners as per methods ordained by Amma. The entire sequence of events right from who is to carry the Agandam and how the Drishti should be performed by children, young and old women with lamps, camphor, etc is directed by Amma.
The 'Agandam' lamp shines bright and helps to dispel the darkness thus illuminating the minds of the people.
Amma, in Her Oracle, has said: “The Agandam has the power to help one out of crisis that is consequent to one's past actions”.

1974 – Consecration of Saptha Kanniyar shrine in Melmaruvathur Siddhar Peedam

Of the many Shaktis or powers of the Divine Mother Adhiparasakthi, the Saptha Kanniyars occupy a special place. They are worshipped widely in the villages and rural areas of India. "Saptha" means seven and "Kanniyar'' means virgin. They are described in the legend as the accompanying angels of the Divine Mother Adhiparasakthi. It is a general practice that the shrine of the Saptha Kanniyars is built without a roof. Even the shrine at Melmaruvathur has been built with walls on four sides but without a roof.

In 1974, Amma instructed a member of the Harijan community (a community that was not allowed inside temples traditionally) to construct a shrine for the "Saptha Kanniyar" thus making the Om Sakthi movement truly rise above caste, creed, and social differences. "You, hailing from a community that is barred from entering temples, shall proceed to construct the Saptha Kanni shrine here. The very same society that prohibited you, will come and offer prayers in the shrine built by you.", said Amma.

Brahmi: She represents the creative faculty. Swan the symbol of discrimination or 'Viveka' is her vehicle or Vahana. Brahmi Sakthi gives you "Viveka", the power of discrimination, the ability to hold on to the unchanging truth instead of being caught up in fleeting desires and aversions.

Maheshwari: She is the subtler, silent, and innocent aspect of Ishwara(Shiva). During the period when negativity clouds our mind and conflicts arise, She unconditionally nourishes and protects our innocence and enthusiasm from being clouded over. She represents the energy of the Bull that is against dullness, inertia, and anger.

Kaumari: She is the mother of Karthikeya, the warrior chief of the Gods. She, who destroys greed, is the surge of hidden power and strength of great warriors. She is the embodiment of the power that is channelized with knowledge. Her vehicle is the peacock. Her hidden strength is like that of a peacock that opens up in times of need.

Vaishnavi: She represents the Vishnu Sakthi. To be able to tackle negative forces over a period of time, one needs to be able to sustain positivity. Garuda, Her vehicle, is the antidote to the snake-like venom of negativity that spreads its wings when one lacks awareness. Her energy prevents the poison of negativity from disseminating.

Varahi: She is the Shakthi of Varaha, the boar-headed form of Vishnu. Her vehicle is the buffalo. She, who destroys self-pride, is the power that declutters and lifts one's consciousness. Living in the past, worrying about the future, negativity, impure thoughts, anger, etc clutter the mind. Varahi cleans, uplifts, and allows one to rise higher in the spiritual plane.

Indrani: She represents the Shakthi of Indra. Her vehicle is the elephant. She, the destroyer of jealousy, represents collective consciousness and also helps one to be centered.

Chamundi: She represents the power of Kali, the destroyer of sins. Chamundi removes all lethargy and infuses life in a person. She is depicted as standing over a corpse to show that her energy is so magnificent that even a lifeless body can become her vehicle. She is said to remove all fear associated with samsara(the cycle of birth and rebirth to which life in the material world is bound).

A Humble beginning

The "Om Sakthi" Movement, also referred ...to as the "Sakthi Yugam" began when the neem tree had been uprooted during a storm thus revealing the "Swayambhu".
A small thatched hut that housed the "Swayambhu", with an earthen lamp at a corner, surrounded by the bushes of "'Velikaathaan", and mounds of fine white sand.. this was the Melmaruvathur Siddhar Peedam of the yesteryears.

Oracle - Voice of the Divine

When the touch of the Mother's grace descends upon Her children, it is not only felt as a refreshing shower of Divine mercy but also as an avalanche that reorientates the heart and burns away all negativities.
Bangaru Amma - the manifestation of the divine Mother Adhiparasakthi - the eternal truth in human form started delivering Her oracles in the year 1970. The oracles delivered by Amma would be spontaneous and swift, encompassing the devotees' purpose of visit, their problems, needs, and solutions.
When Amma delivers Her oracle, thousands of unsaid utterances are latent within, and only those who have realized the Mother may truly decipher Her words in their entirety to a certain extent.

Oracles for Everyone

Amma gave her first oracle to Mr. Nagarajan from Acharapakkam in the year 1970. Mr. Nagarajan was not to talk about his experience to anybody. Only after a month, Amma started delivering oracles to the public. Amma resolved unsolvable problems of those who came to her. Incurable diseases were cured. Atheists were transformed. Some were given glimpses of their previous lives. Those possessed by evil spirits, victimized by black magic and witchcraft were ultimately cured and relieved by Her oracles.

Her oracles are laden with the past, present, and future happenings, assurances of protection, medicinal remedies, instructions on rites and rituals, and spiritual directives geared according to one's spiritual maturity.

Because it is the Divine Mother who speaks as Adigalar, She does not need the devotee to tell Her the troubles, the Oracles to the solution would simply flow out spontaneously when the devotee has prostrated before Her.
When the devotee abides and carries out the divine order, it then becomes Her responsibility to take over to assist and protect.

Oracle in the early days

During the early days, it was the people in and around Melmaruvathur, who would come in for Oracle. Initially, oracles were given for free, and then to regulate the surging crowd, a fee of Rs 2 was charged. As days went by, the place witnessed thronging crowds and snake queues waiting for Amma's Oracle. The Oracle would start in the evening and ceaselessly continue through midnight and up to early dawn. With every batch of people that came from distant places, Amma would never hesitate to get into the well to bathe again in the dark, circumambulate the Deity with neem in her hand and start the process all over again.

Development of the Siddhar Peedam

Though the Om Sakthi Movement faced several hurdles during its inception, The mother has held a steady hand at the helm guiding her children through troubled times.
In Her oracles, Amma gave instructions to establish the Adhiparasakthi weekly worship centers (called 'Mandrams'). The Adhiparasakthi trust was also formed to run educational and medical institutions to provide social service. From food to education, medical aid, providing means of livelihood, to caring for the environment, every aspect of the society that is taken care of, stems from the Divine Oracles of the Mother.

Millions of people, from all over the world, irrespective of caste, creed, and religion flock to Her presence with their problems, to seek guidance and to be benefited materially and spiritually.

To honor Guru is to honor God.
The Guru shows us the path to God. The Guru is a guide who saves us from miseries we face due to actions done in the past. As a mark of reverence, one should first glorify the Guru by making an offering (Guru kaanikkai) as a small token of gratitude for guiding us throughout our spiritual journey. One should then continue with regular prayer.
Charity and philanthropy have always been in the ethos of our tradition. In the olden days, the practice of setting aside some quantity of rice and money every day was being followed at households. The rice and money would then be collected and used to feed the poor. This family tradition of giving is missing in today's world. One can start over, by making this offering every day, before prayer.

One might even wonder whether it is feasible to do this every day! Some may not afford it. It is not in the value of the monetary offering one makes, but in the intent..in the feeling of gratitude and surrender that one holds for the Guru. When an offering is made with love and devotion, the Guru accepts it completely.
The daily money-offering that one makes should be collected and given away in charity or offered at the offertory box in the worship centers or Siddhar Peedam.
Our Guru, Bangaru Amma models this procedure by offering a small amount of money at the Offertory box installed at the OM altar in the outer sanctum, before setting foot inside the main sanctum. This teaches us that, it is only through giving, that one can attain the Almighty.
How can a tiny offering be of any significance?
Well, it is little drops of water that make a mighty ocean. Our offerings contribute to building hospitals for the needy, schools for special children, other educational institutions, and various other philanthropic proceeds. Any offering or charity one does is acknowledged by our Guru and the benefits one reaps are abundant.
How should one Pray?
One must pray for the well-being of the Guru, Guru's family by wishing them all good health. One must pray for the welfare of every living being on earth.
Next, our prayers should be for the success of the upcoming events or festivals that are celebrated in grandeur in Melmaruvathur, praying and wishing that people from all over the globe should participate, benefit, and be graced by Amma.
Devotion, Selfless service, meditation when woven with our prayers, and offerings can help multitudes of people. These ethics, the Sakthi Ethics, should prevail, so that future generations can learn and benefit.

One day I unexpectedly met a friend, who was also a devotee of Amma. ...

One day I unexpectedly met a friend, who was also a devotee of Amma. He was from a wealthy family and had been blessed with all fortunes one can imagine. ...But he was not content. I once asked him why he looked worried.

Though he hesitated to open up initially, he later started talking. He said, "I have everything in life.
I have been following the path of righteousness as guided by Amma and I continue to do charity with Her blessings. Still, there is a 'void' in my heart and I don't feel content. "
I could empathize and wanted to help him. I started narrating a story.
"A prince became the new king after his father's death. He ruled the kingdom wisely under the council of ministers and learned men. People loved him. But he wasn't happy. He always found emptiness in his heart that worried him. So, he decided to invoke blessings from the Almighty by offering prayers and performing rituals in a sacred fire which was called Yagna.
Many pious men attended the Yagna and blessed him with prosperity and long life. In the end, a saint with glowing eyes, who wasn't interested in the gifts offered by the king, came near him and said "Oh King! Try to get rid of the void in your mind," and left abruptly.
The king was taken aback. He took the saint's words seriously and started looking for ways to fill the void. He performed a lot of charity, following every known kind of righteousness, but he still felt that void. Giving up, he solicited the saint to his court and asked "Oh Saint! I have not been able to get rid of the void in my mind like you said. It seems to be increasing every day and I am unable to rule my kingdom peacefully."
The saint said," If you are not able to rule the kingdom peacefully, then give it to me."
Though surprised, the king obliged to give away the kingdom. The saint asked "Now, what will you do?" to which the king replied, "I have to take up a job somewhere, in order to fend for my family."
"Instead of working elsewhere, why don't you work for me?" asked the saint.
Speechless, the king happily agreed.
The saint immediately said "Do the same job you did until now. Rule the kingdom for me as my representative. I may conduct a surprise audit anytime." Saying so, the saint left the palace.
The king went back to his job and ruled the kingdom efficiently.
After a year, the saint came back. He asked the king who welcomed him, "How is your regime?"
"Everything is going well. People are happy. There is prosperity in the kingdom with flawless administration. Everything is in place"
"What happened to the void in your mind?".
"Void? That's gone. Please conduct the audit." The saint laughed and asked "Oh king! I am not interested in the accounts. Just tell me how the void disappeared!"
The king was unable to express himself in words.
The saint explained to him, " Before you offered me your kingdom, you thought that everything belonged to you and that you were responsible. You were constantly under pressure and that worried you. Hence the void in your mind. But later when you worked for someone else with the same responsibilities, you weren't pressurized. Hence the contentment!"
Believe that nothing belongs to you. It all belongs to God. And you are the servant of God performing your duties in this birth. Remove the thoughts of me, mine, myself, and just perform your duty without worrying about the outcome".
As I finished the story, my friend looked enlightened. He held my hand and said "Thanks a lot. Through Her oracles, Amma told me several times that this birth of yours is only to dissolve karma from your previous birth. You have been given family, wealth, relatives for this reason. You must perform your duty". But mindlessly I have been assuming that everything is mine, my property, earned solely by my hard work and effort. Now I know the reason for the emptiness in the mind!
His void and worries seemed to have vanished. He felt awakened and realized his part in the game, have we too?

I was in a conversation with a lady in Chennai. She was narrating one of her experiences from her life. Quote: "As I recollect, I've always been an ...ardent devotee of goddesses throughout my life. I would never let go of any opportunity of serving the needy. Having heard a lot about Melmaruvathur, I decided to visit. I didn't know about 'Bangaru Amma', I was only interested in worshipping the deity in the shrine.
My family was under the influence of black magic and I was desperately looking for relief. Despite several visits, we did not come out of misery. I decided to seek the help of Bangaru Amma. Amma in her Oracle once said, “My daughter, someone has cast an evil spell on you. You should frequently come here”.
However, the problems did not seem to disappear. So, I again went to Bangaru Amma and Amma explained “The people who you afflicted in your past life are seeking revenge in your present life. I will take care. Perform pada pooja and pray for your misery to end.'
It was a moment of great awakening after I performed the pada pooja and I realized the glory of Bangaru Amma. Whenever I was perplexed, Amma would speak to me in my dreams. However, I continued visiting astrologers and other temples.
Once Amma asked me,' Whenever you are in trouble, I speak to you through your dreams and give clarity. Why do you still go after Nadi-Astrology ? What is it that they say? Just information about your previous life, isn't it? Shall I narrate to you, your stories of two or three past lives? Shall I tell you even what is not documented in the Nadi?
After hearing that, I cringed at my stupidity. Amma continued, 'So, you will neither leave me nor other goddesses! Isn't it ?' I replied,' Mother, Aren't you all forms of Goddess?' for which Amma replied, "Yes. But the spiritual states are different. You don't have the cognition to understand that. You can leave now."

Though it is the same soul that is manifest in all living beings or Goddesses, The manifestation of the one universal Supreme soul AdhiParaSakthi is the greatest and highest in the Avatar of Bangaru Amma.
One must realize this truth and seek refuge in Bangaru Amma.
